ANDERS NILSEN and BRIAN RALPH: July 31, 7pm - 10pm: Launch of Anders Nilsen's highly anticipated Big Questions book and preview of Brian Ralph's Daybreak, both published by Drawn and Quarterly

August 6, 7pm - 10pm: A display of original artwork by Rand Holmes, curated by Martha Holmes and Patrick Rosenkranz, author of THE ARTIST HIMSELF: A RAND HOLMES RETROSPECTIVE. Holmes is perhaps best known for his Harold Hedd comics and covers for the Georgia Straight in the 1970s. He moved to Lasqueti Island in the 1980s and passed away in 2002. Rosenkranz will give a presentation on his work.

DAVID BOSWELL: August 16, 7pm - 9pm: Launch of recently released collection of the ground-breaking and influential comic book REID FLEMING: WORLD'S TOUGHEST MILKMAN published by IDW.

REBECCA DART: Oct. 21, 7pm - 9pm: Launch of unique nursery rhyme collection published by First Second Books (:01) - local favourite Rebecca Dart (Rabbithead) is one of five artists involved.

Well if you follow comics you know that last weekend was the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, aka TCAF. Sounds like it was pretty amazing once again - congratulations to the Beguiling for putting on a show that is now undoubtedly one of the premier annual comic events in North America.

Coming up:

• Looking forward to Chester Brown's appearance at the VPL Central Branch on May 18. Toronto is spoiled with TCAF, here in Vancouver we don't often get giant names like Chester Brown coming through. His new book "Paying For It" is controversial and much talked-about - chronicling Brown's experiences paying for.."it". Been hearing raves about his recent appearances in Eastern Canada, it should be memorable. 
• Koyama Press - more great books arriving this week from Koyama, including Lose #3 from Michael DeForge, Cat Rackham by Steve Wolfhard, Monster Party by Chris "Elio" Eliopoulos, and an anthology called Root Rot (Contributors include Jon Vermilyea, Derek M. Ballard, Dan Zettwoch, T. Study Group 12 Anthology

The new evolution of the Ignatz Award-winning comics anthology STUDYGROUP12 is a lavish, handmade package with silkscreened covers & offset interiors and some of the best talent the comics industry has to offer!

The 9x12" album sized SG12 is "perfect-bound" with a fancy spine and everything.

here's what the "offical press release" had to say:
In the six years since issue three, editor Zack Soto focused on his own comics, including THE SECRET VOICE for Adhouse Books, moved to Portland, OR, and helped run local comics/art hub PONY CLUB GALLERY. During his tenure with the gallery, Soto curated several monthly group shows and met dozens of artists working in the Portland comics and art scene. Shortly after leaving the gallery to pursue comics full-time, that old anthology itch came back. Thus, we have STUDYGROUP12 #4, a mixture of some of the best Pacific Northwest artists and other great cartoonists from around North America.

Zack has teamed up with Jason Leivian of Floating World Comics to publish this incarnation of SG12, with interiors printed by Eberhardt Press. The series has evolved from issue to issue, changing format each time in a natural evolution of craft and intention. They have come saddle-stitched, perfect-bound by hand, and coil-bound with chipboard covers -- but always with silkscreened covers and photocopied interiors. This issue is another step forward -- the interiors will be offset-printed in a blue Pantone ink on cream paper along with a two-color section and perfect-bound into hand-pulled silkscreened covers, in a limited edition of 500 copies.

Lucky’s Gallery is pleased to present the forthcoming exhibition- Free Punches, by Vancouver artist Daniel Brodie. With worn out sharpies, found paper, and free paint Daniel Brodie presents a diarist mapping of quotidian association. The dailyness of daily life is comfortably occupied without excuse. In a generous offering of everywhere and nowhere Brodie indulges in the lure of the ordinary. Abstaining from pragmatic performance Brodie’s drawings, paintings, collages and sculptural installations aspire personal political tenor, a reconciliation of revolving potential. In participation of counter consciousness, an affectionate embrace towards pensive looking reverberates the poetic nature of noticing the everyday. A loop of gestures, contradictions and qualifications openly explore the material possibilities of immaterial routines and repetitious senses, validating a desire for closeness and focused understanding. 

Amanda Lye - Miniatures: Systems, Structures and the Inane

Parting is such the sweet sorrow...only two days left to enjoy Amanda Lye's Miniatures: Systems, Structures and the Inane.

Lucky’s Gallery is pleased to present the forthcoming exhibition- Miniatures: Systems, Structures and the Inane, by Vancouver artist Amanda Lye. A study of order, Lye presents a collection of acquired objects representing an affinity for the miniature. An ongoing project, her ever-shifting installation offers an engaging conversation with the contemporary condition of escalating pluralism. The collection's orientation to multiple aspects or parts disturbs symbolic representation, underscoring the oblique nature of an archive composed of recalcitrant material. The placement of each inventory within appropriate box (along walls and upon shelves and tables) proposes value distinctions and provides structuralized containment for a frenetic assemblage. Although precarious, the varied objects are arranged in a carefully maintained order of idiosyncrasy. With a utopian spirit, Lye’s anomic structures recoup failed visions, vital knowledges, and familiar narratives of what has been or what could be.

VPL zine buy at Lucky's

The Vancouver Public Library is coming by Lucky's for what is turning into a semi-regular visit to replenish and stock up their zine library at the Central Branch downtown. If you self-publish a zine, art book, comic or any kind of mini-book, get it down to Lucky's for consignment by June 21st to be considered by the librarians. No book too humble to be considered - hand-folded and stapled is a-ok!

If you are bringing books down, 3 copies is perfect, the library might take 2, then we'd have one left over for the store and would be able to contact you for more.

Please price your books. Our policy is to keep 40% consignment, so factor that into your price (if it sells for $3.00, we keep $1.20).

So...you have eight or nine days, that's enough time to start and finish something, so get to it knucklehead!

Just a note to let you know of a couple upcoming launches at Lucky's - this Friday, March 20 is the Pohadky book launch with Pat Shewchuck and Marek Colek, published by Drawn and Quarterly (5pm - 8pm), and then on April 3 Chicago resident Paul Hornschemeier will be coming to town with slideshow in tow for a launch of Mother Come Home published by Fantagraphics Books.
